Urea is an amide nitrogen fertilizer. After being applied to the soil, it needs to be converted into ammonium nitrogen before it can be absorbed and utilized by the crop roots. The conversion time is affected by factors such as soil temperature and moisture. Generally speaking, the higher the soil temperature, the faster the conversion rate. The fertilizer effect is relatively long-lasting. It can be used as base fertilizer and topdressing, and sometimes it can be used as seed fertilizer with caution, but it should be noted that the biuret content should not be too high.
Urea is an organic nitrogen fertilizer. After being applied to the soil, it is easily hydrolyzed into ammonium carbonate or ammonium bicarbonate through the action of urease secreted by soil microorganisms before it can be absorbed and utilized by crops. The hydrolysis rate is related to soil acidity, humidity, and temperature. When the soil temperature is 10ºC, it takes 7 - 10 days for urea to completely convert into ammonium nitrogen; when the temperature is 20ºC, it takes 4 - 5 days; and when the temperature is 30ºC, it takes 2 - 3 days. Therefore, the fertilizer effect of urea is relatively slow, and it should be applied in advance appropriately when used as a top dressing.
